What’s so funny about getting an AI app to give you a toast?

A A friend recently shared a comment someone made about her online. Sophie was middle-aged, never affected by the judgment of strangers, who took advantage of her children and alienated everyone she met. While debating whether “liking” a post should be read as support or broad agreement, I noticed a strange sign. The bad words were not spawned by a bitter alien, but by an AI-baked program. A crazy friend of mine requested this.

Who would volunteer to be insulted? A wave of apps like Roastai.app, Roastedby.ai, Roastik.com and er, Monica.im suggest the answer is more of us. Every day, people upload photos to Reddit’s r/RoastMe page, begging to be downloaded for a pin or two. “You look like a series of sites stacked on top of each other,” users exclaim. “Why does your forehead start at the back of your head?” There is a cruel technique. One of the sitting artists was recently called “BMI Notorious”, while another person, who I don’t even think has strabismus, was accused of having “loan eyes – one fixed, one variable. “

At the end of the day, the grill is full of brutal, hard to defend products. It takes us directly to the debate about comedy and crime, the front lines of the culture war. What are we allowed to joke about? What are the rules? How do we know not to laugh at the burning hateful laughter? The truth is that some people always want to play with hot stuff, radioactive topics, burning language. “People love to bake,” confirmed Sophie (a formidable mother). But why?

In her memoirs A Widow’s TaleJoyce Carol Oates reveals a surprising aspect of her grief: she misses the feeling of being teased. Impotence can be a sign of intimacy. The same psychology helps in baking. A play on “Toasting”, the word was coined in the New York member’s club of the 40’s, and was popularized by Dean Martin’s Celebrity Roasts with his friends in the Rat Pack. To be baked is to be truly seen – and celebrated anyway.

The question is: why do we bake? It may be preceded by a joke. I’m thinking of Rebel Wilson’s character Perfect pitch. “I call myself Fat Amy so don’t bite branches like you do in the back” is a perfect line. But can we always get rid of the snake? And should we? I admit it’s hard to listen to some of Sammy Davis Jr.’s self-loathing comedy. The most talented member of the Rat Pack, it was only because of Sinatra’s intercession that Davis was allowed to stay at the hotels where they played. Owning our pain doesn’t necessarily change it.

Frying in group chats is now a precious pastime among my friends. I wonder if Britain has adopted America because our word “banter” has grown so toxic? So ready are the bags to defend, who is confused by loud noise and laughter? Shame, like banter means back. (I don’t call anyone that, because no one wants to sound like a Musketeer.)

Comedy is twisted and slippery, like the human spirit. I remember another friend, who served in Afghanistan during the actual war, telling me about her army’s call sign. She chose the Pork Chop. As in “Hello Pig Pig, this is Bravo 21; the message is over.” After a while, the boys in her cell started calling her a badass, and I laughed so hard when she told me, “Hold the big red button.”

Laughter can depend mainly on the tone and context of the relationship. Setting things straight, along with my sense of purpose. In this case, something about her rejection of gender norms and her equal ineffectiveness. Other relationships are important – if her friends were baking to be included, or excluded. There is also a latent energy feedback loop. My friend, who is definitely not a cupcake, tells me this because she expects me to find it funny, which makes her find it funny too.

Comedy – even the nonsensical stuff – is modern. Unfortunately, the internet is good at removing context and content. It is unfortunate that the joke has fallen into the hands of those least qualified to handle it. On the one hand, people need to argue about everything, on the other hand they are bigoted. None of these are my people, and I refuse to pick a team.

Is comedy moral? No, it’s more important than that. Humor is deeply rooted as well as a social safety valve against dogmatic thinking. The rules around what is funny are as useless as trying to explain the charm of the charm and set square. But just because anything can be funny, doesn’t mean everything is fun.

Needless to say, I immediately downloaded the baking app and meant it to myself. do me! She came back with some gags that make weak fun of the fact that I don’t regularly log into X or Instagram, where she gathers her information. Too lazy to print. AI is bad at baking not because it’s evil, or offensive, but because it’s not funny. AI is not capable of communication, or meaningful celebration. She could call me a child-eating traitor with Peter Pan syndrome, but she doesn’t know me that way.

Anyway, they say you shouldn’t take apart comics, so instead I’m going to call Sophie’s social services. Now that’s what I call banter!
